歌曲的演唱者Bertie Higgins於1944年12月8日出生於佛羅里達州，Bertie身為職業音樂家，堅實的音樂基礎使他在60年代早期的單獨演唱能夠脫穎而出，一鳴驚人。經過七十年代的醞釀，1982年他的首次演唱《卡薩布蘭卡》實際上使他東山再起，因為這是他自1968年落寞以來在音樂上的又一次冒險。這首歌收錄在他的1982年專輯《主要樂章》中，是1982年泛太平洋區的年度最佳歌曲。也是他唯一的成功之作（Key Largo除外）;這首歌曲由Bertie Higgins在 1986年錄唱，又收錄在1994年的唱片《Then end now》中。

在影片中，它是男女主角還在巴黎時的定情曲，當時伊麗莎(Ilsa)是個有夫之婦，只是以為丈夫已經戰死而跟瑞克(Rick)相戀，他們最愛聽一位黑人爵士歌手山姆(Sam)邊彈鋼琴、邊唱這首歌。在他們相約一起逃出巴黎的時候，伊麗莎卻由於發現丈夫還活著而不得不爽約，兩人就此分散了。後來伊麗莎跟從事地下反納粹工作的丈夫逃到卡薩布蘭卡，意外的在一家酒店（Rick's candlelit café）里看見了山姆。驚喜與感慨之中，她對山姆說出了成為經典對白的那句話：「再表演一次，山姆，彈奏《時光流逝》。（Play it again, Sam. Play "As time goes by".）」山姆為她唱出了這首歌，使得瑞克怒氣沖沖的從辦公室里沖出來，因為他一直不許山姆再唱這首歌，以免勾起他的相思。責罵的話說到一半，他才看見伊麗莎，兩人就這樣重逢了，只是伊麗莎身旁多了一個丈夫，他們只能恨造化弄人。兩首不同的歌曲，一樣無助的情懷。
由於《As time goes by》這首歌在《北非諜影》片中扮演著極為重要的角色，絕大多數人都以為它是特別為本片譜寫的主題曲，但事實並非如此，因為這首歌早在本片問世十年前，就已經在歐美大為流行了。它的作者名叫赫曼"哈普菲德（Herman Hupfeld），雖然在20年代和30年代十分活躍，基本上並不算是個非常成功的作曲家。
《As time goes by》原本是舞台劇《Everyone's Welcome》中一首曲子，該劇在1931年已停演，所有的歌曲在人們的腦海里淡忘。《北非諜影》拍攝時需一首愛情歌曲，導演記起這首《時光流逝》，臨時拿來代替。影片完成時，影片作曲馬克斯"斯坦那(Max Stainer——他的另一名作是《亂世佳人》作曲)，一直想為影片重寫一首歌。由於製片商反對，因原定的發行期將臨，而英格麗"褒曼亦已剪掉片中的長發不能重拍只能作罷。
正是這部影片的成功，使得這首讓人遺忘的歌，起死還生，成為一首經典歌曲。片中扮演樂師山姆的杜利"威爾遜(Dooley Wilson),也因出色的表演並演唱這首歌，而英名長存。
