這是一家建於1952年8月1日屬於中國人民解放軍的電影製片廠，由中 國人民解放軍總政治部領導，所製作的影片多是以軍事題材為主的，當然 也拍一些其他題材的影片（如《許茂和他的女兒們（1981八一）》）。最初，這個廠只生產軍事教育片和新聞紀錄片，第一部作品是軍事教育片《 河川進攻》，拍於1952年。第一部彩色長紀錄片《八一運動會》完成於195 3年。生產故事片是從1955年開始的，第一部為《沖破黎明前的黑暗》。1958-1959又開始拍攝科教片。
這個廠擁有先進的生產設備，比如大、中、小同期錄音攝影棚、洗印 樓、移動照明發電設備等，它的攝像錄像設備也是國內一流的。
