故事的主角是老木偶匠蓋比特(Geppetto)親手所雕刻的一個小木偶，他的名字就叫做匹諾曹。在魔法為匹諾曹注入了神奇的生命力之後，匹諾曹便一心渴望成為一個活生生的男孩。為了實現這個願望，匹諾曹找到善良的藍仙女。藍仙女答應了他的要求，但卻有一個附加條件：匹諾曹必須學會誠實、勇敢、不自私自利。而且同時作為懲罰，每當匹諾曹說謊時，他的鼻子便會不斷地變長。的確，誠實並不是一件可以輕松擁有的美德，還沒有認真意識到誠實的重要的匹諾曹，鼻子很快就越變越長，並且麻煩的事情也接踵而至！……終於，經過無數艱辛的磨難和考驗，匹諾曹總算了解到了誠實的含義。而作為仙子的獎賞，匹諾曹也實現了自己期待已久的夢想——變成一個真正活生生的"人"。
