The protagonist of the film is the title character Aladdin, a young man living on the streets with no parents, no money, and no friends. Except for Abu, his faithful tiny monkey sidekick. Though trapped in a situation where his next meal will have to be stolen, Aladdin refuses to believe that he's merely a "street rat." This pickpocket with a good heart and big dreams hopes that one day he'll get a chance to show people that there's much more to him than they thought.

Meanwhile, inside the Sultan's advisor Jafar is a hunger for wealth and power that cannot be quenched. Sure, he can use his cobra staff to essentially hypnotize the Sultan into doing anything. But the Cave of Wonders and its endless riches call to his very tortured soul. As with any good villain, cunning and backhanded plotting is what Jafar sees as the path to his goal.

Then there's Jasmine, the Sultan's daughter, whose reluctance to fall for some highfalutin suitor has her father afraid and uneasy. Jasmine's disinterest seems merited. She's discontent with the sheltered princess existence, and only has her animal sidekick (Rajah, a grand tiger) to confide in. Looking for more, Jasmine escapes from the palace one night, hoping to find adventure and unpredictability.

What she finds outside the palace walls is that people are fast and not always friendly. Just moments into her introction to the marketplace and she's about to get her hand chopped off. But Aladdin, who is struck by Jasmine's beauty, steps in and eases out of the situation like the pro he is. Jasmine is quickly as taken by Aladdin's charm as he is with her, thinking she's from his class of commoners. But the two are separated before Jasmine can even get his name, and Aladdin's embarassed and disappointed to realize that his new potential love interest is royalty.

For Aladdin, there is a silver lining to getting captured and locked in a ngeon by Jafar and his cronies. Jafar's ulterior motives are to get the boy to make him rich via the Cave of Wonders. But in the process, Aladdin finds a magic lamp and inside, a great and powerful Genie. Aladdin is now the Genie's master and entitled to three wishes. The Genie's whirlwind entrance, 35 minutes into the film, introces a unique animated character. Infused with the voice and spontaneity of actor/comedian Robin Williams and not bound by any spatial or logical limitations, Genie is a free spirit. The irony of it is that freedom is the one thing Genie does not have. As a genie, he must serve whoever rubs the lamp.

Long ago, a poor tailor lived in a small village. He lived with his wife and boy, Aladdin. Aladdin didn't like to work hard. He liked to play in the streets. He never learned to do useful things. This made his father very angry.
很久以前，某个小村庄里，有一位贫穷的裁缝师。他和妻儿住在一起，儿子叫做阿拉丁。阿拉丁不喜欢努力干活，反而喜欢在街上玩耍。他从不学些正经的事，这点让他父亲非常生气。
The tailor worked very hard. One day, he felt very ill, and the next day, he died. Aladdin and his mother had almost no money. How would the family live? Aladdin had no job, so his mother was very upset with him.

One day, a strange man came to the village. He was a magician from the western desert. Aladdin was playing in the street. The magician saw the boy and walked up to him.

"Yes, I am," replied Aladdin. "He is dead now."

"I want to help your son," said the magician. "I will build him a shop. He can sell fruit or shoes or clothing. Then you will have money."

"Be patient, my boy," replied the magician. "I am taking you to the mountains. There is a special place I want you to see."

Aladdin poured the oil out of the lamp. Then he returned to the steps. The magician heard him coming.
"Stop there," he told Aladdin. "Throw the lamp to me."
"You are too far, Uncle," Aladdin said. "I don't want to break the lamp. Wait until I come up the steps..."
阿拉丁把灯里的油倒出来，接着返回阶梯处，魔术师听到他来了。
他告诉阿拉丁说：“停在那里，把灯丢给我。”

The magician got very angry. He threw some more powder on the fire, and the stone rolled on top of the hole. Suddenly, everything around Aladdin was dark.
"Fool!" screamed the magician. "You did not do what I told you! Now, you will die in that hole!"

"Please get me out of this place," replied Aladdin. "I want to go home."

"I feel hungry," said Aladdin. "Can you get me something to eat?"

The genie flew away. In a few moments, he came back. He was carrying a large basket. The basket was full of tasty dishes. It smelled wonderful. Aladdin ate the food quickly. Now, he felt very happy. He could give his mother food and money. She would be proud of him!

"Mother, I am in love," he said. "Please go to the sultan's palace. Ask him if I can marry his beautiful daughter."
