《d小调托卡塔与赋格》原是一首管风琴曲。管风琴的音域宽广，音色多变，音量极大，气势宏伟，曾有“乐器之王”之称。最大的可高达数层楼，拥有五层键盘和上万根乐管。巴赫最擅长演奏管风琴，其作品的音响构思几乎都以此为基础。这首乐曲是他管风琴作品的代表作之一，具有华丽的技巧、风格和雄伟的戏剧情节。据分析，它是作者在1704～1707年间专为阿恩士塔德的新管风琴创作的。由于管风琴的体积非常庞大，构造又相当复杂，无法搬上音乐会舞台，因此这部作品也就没机会向广大听众介绍。为此，美国指挥家斯托柯夫斯基把它改编成管弦乐曲，用丰富的器乐色彩，在音乐会舞台上重现了它的雄伟气魄和深刻的意境。乐曲由一首托卡塔曲和一首赋格曲组成，前后两部分的音乐形象十分统一，全都以同一个乐思作为基础.

托卡塔自由、即兴，就象一首表情夸张的宣叙调。赋格曲非常接近主调风格，没有固定对题，也没有横向曲调线的复杂交织，特别是结尾部分，出现了一连串加有辉煌的走句式的和弦进行，好象又回到了一开始的托卡塔曲，进一步加强了整个乐曲的完整性和统一性。

《d小调托卡塔与赋格》是巴赫青年时代的代表作之一，后由波兰作曲家斯托考夫斯基改编为管弦乐曲，并由波兰钢琴家、作曲家陶西格改编为钢琴曲。乐曲采用了d小调，4/4拍。由下行旋律组成的慢板的引子饱满而有力，为全曲宏伟的气势作了渲染和铺垫；然后，乐曲奏出音响宏大的和弦，接着呈现出托卡塔主题，带有戏剧性的成分；在托卡塔主题结束后，乐曲在上声部出现赋格主题，采用与引子部分相同的音乐素材；随后，赋格主题移至低声部呈示，前后反复出现八次，音乐情绪逐步高涨；最后，乐曲再现托卡塔部分，以气势雄伟的尾声结束。这里选用的是作品的管风琴演奏版。本作品曾被现代“情调钢琴王子”理查德·克莱德曼引用，使之广为流传。
