在影片中，它是男女主角还在巴黎时的定情曲，当时伊丽莎(Ilsa)是个有夫之妇，只是以为丈夫已经战死而跟瑞克(Rick)相恋，他们最爱听一位黑人爵士歌手山姆(Sam)边弹钢琴、边唱这首歌。在他们相约一起逃出巴黎的时候，伊丽莎却由于发现丈夫还活着而不得不爽约，两人就此分散了。后来伊丽莎跟从事地下反纳粹工作的丈夫逃到卡萨布兰卡，意外的在一家酒店（Rick's candlelit café）里看见了山姆。惊喜与感慨之中，她对山姆说出了成为经典对白的那句话：“再表演一次，山姆，弹奏《时光流逝》。（Play it again, Sam. Play "As time goes by".）”山姆为她唱出了这首歌，使得瑞克怒气冲冲的从办公室里冲出来，因为他一直不许山姆再唱这首歌，以免勾起他的相思。责骂的话说到一半，他才看见伊丽莎，两人就这样重逢了，只是伊丽莎身旁多了一个丈夫，他们只能恨造化弄人。两首不同的歌曲，一样无助的情怀。
由于《As time goes by》这首歌在《北非谍影》片中扮演着极为重要的角色，绝大多数人都以为它是特别为本片谱写的主题曲，但事实并非如此，因为这首歌早在本片问世十年前，就已经在欧美大为流行了。它的作者名叫赫曼"哈普菲德（Herman Hupfeld），虽然在20年代和30年代十分活跃，基本上并不算是个非常成功的作曲家。
《As time goes by》原本是舞台剧《Everyone's Welcome》中一首曲子，该剧在1931年已停演，所有的歌曲在人们的脑海里淡忘。《北非谍影》拍摄时需一首爱情歌曲，导演记起这首《时光流逝》，临时拿来代替。影片完成时，影片作曲马克斯"斯坦那(Max Stainer——他的另一名作是《乱世佳人》作曲)，一直想为影片重写一首歌。由于制片商反对，因原定的发行期将临，而英格丽"褒曼亦已剪掉片中的长发不能重拍只能作罢。
正是这部影片的成功，使得这首让人遗忘的歌，起死还生，成为一首经典歌曲。片中扮演乐师山姆的杜利"威尔逊(Dooley Wilson),也因出色的表演并演唱这首歌，而英名长存。
